For #RowStar Instructor Matt, rowing is more than a sport, it’s a lifestyle. He missed his collegiate rowing days, but when he found weRow he knew he’d found something he could do for life.
#WhyMattRowsweRow is super glad he found us, too. Matt’s calm, cool, collected coxswain style is his signature. But don’t let his chill attitude fool you. Matt regularly leads his crew to their personal best with his dynamic blend of technical tips and split-dropping challenges. He’s not afraid to pull up an erg right next to his crew and demo reaching into the catch or quick hands. We tracked Matt down to uncover a little more about what makes him tick.
What brought you to weRow?
I wanted to get back into rowing and discovered 5 days free.
What do you do to refuel after a hard row?
I like chocolate milk, bananas, or a banana peanut butter sandwich....and water.
What’s your favorite food or beverage indulgence?
Early bird or night owl?
It’s a sunny, warm Saturday afternoon. What physical activity are you up to (besides rowing, of course)?
A leisurely bike ride or walking
What’s your favorite thing about MN? What’s the weirdest thing about MN?
I'm a native Minnesotan and my favorite thing about MN is the State Fair. Sometime I go 2-3 times a year! The weirdest thing about Minnesota is that we call soda pop, which drives everyone nuts.
You have $5 at your favorite grocery store. What do you buy?
I would buy an original glazed donut and kombucha, not necessarily the best combo, but so good!
What subject could you give an impromptu 30 minute presentation on?
The Galapagos Islands. I took a pretty extensive class on it in college, since I was a biology major, so I learned a lot about it.
5 songs you know by heart?
Don't Stop Believing by Journey
Drivin' Me Wild by Common ft. Lily Allen
Let Me Blow Ya Mind by Eve ft Gwen Stefani
Look at Me Now by Chris Brown
Feel Good Inc. by The Gorillaz
Landing my first job
Crew, now you know that the way to Matt’s heart is with a glazed donut (who knew?!) and he’s your go-to for all questions Galapagos.
Matt nailed it: rowing is a lifestyle.
Because rowing is easy on the joints and uses 86% of your muscle mass to burn mega-calories and lengthen and tone, it’s a workout that can handle all the changes life brings as we age. What’s more, weRow is more than just a fitness studio, it’s a community. We sweat together, we cheer for each other and we play together.
